This HOWTO pay maintainers is a great, practical example for how to get some maintainers paid (at least a bit). I especially like the whole debate on _who_ to give money to and that it's not _donations_ but _steady payments_. Good stuff in there, thanks @… for writing it.

Gotta admit I found it pretty irritating, in the xz discussion of the last two weeks, that some people declared confidently "you can't pay maintainers". (cc @ehashman@toot.cat) It isn't *easy* to pay maintainers, but it can be done: at Tidelift, we've been doing it for years. So I figured I'd write up how we do it and what we've learned.
